Sheila with Koala

Sheila with Koala

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sheila Patricia (Hickey) Williams on February 3, 2017. Sheila was born in Rochester NY to Stephen R and Irene (Babe) Hickey. She met the love of her life, Maurice, on a blind date. Eventually settling in New Jersey a company transfer sent them to Washington State in the mid 1970’s. A love for the area and retirement took them back in 1995.

A patron of the arts, Sheila loved attending the opera, ballet, symphony, theater, museums and galleries worldwide. She was an accomplished pianist, an equestrian, loved skiing, and a beloved Gr. Shorthair Pointer her constant

Sheila at the Helm

companion. She and Maury enjoyed sailing and exploring the waters of Puget Sound. Cruises took them around the world and Europe’s inland waterways. Her brilliant smile, non-stop sense of humor, grace and the endless sound of fingers skipping across ivory keys pounding out Rachmaninov or the smooth notes of Beethoven’s Fur Elise will be sorely missed.

Sheila is preceded in death by her parents, Stephen R and Irene Hickey Sr., Brother Stephen R Hickey Jr. She is survived by her husband Maurice, daughter’s Pamela and Paula (Steve); son’s Todd (Erlinda) and Kurtis; Sister Phyllis Hickey; four grandchildren; David, Stephanie, Jacob and Abby; numerous friends and family across the country and her ever vigilant Shorthair, Max.

The Family would like to thank Evergreen Health Hospice Care and staff for their devoted support, compassion and exceptional care with a special thank you to Sue, Carol, Jan and Joe.

In Lieu of flowers the family asks that you donate to your favorite charity, ASPCA or the Parkinson’s Foundation.

A funeral service will be held at Barton’s Family Funeral Service, Kirkland WA on February 28, 2017.

MAY 13, 1960 – FEBRUARY 6, 2017

Adam Scott Bloom, a beloved son, brother and uncle, passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness at the age of 56. He was born May 13, 1960 in Encino, California and died on February 6, 2017. Adam is survived by his siblings, Stephen, Karen, Randi, Rexford, Jonathan, Duff and Drew. He also leaves behind 14 nieces and nephews and 16 great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Allan Ira Bloom, MD, his mother Wilma “Billie” Morgan Bloom, his half-brother Peter, and his twin sister Amy.

Adam’s greatest pleasure was seeing and hearing about his many family members, especially his nieces and nephews. Stories and photos would always bring a big smile to his face. One of Adam’s shining attributes was that he always took great pleasure in others’ good fortune knowing that they enjoyed a life that he would never enjoy or experience.

Adam loved books, was an avid reader and had an encyclopedic mind. He was the person you would call for that esoteric question that you didn’t know the answer to. And Adam had an eclectic appreciation of music and an extensive collection; with some lovely music playing in the background, it was always a pleasure to visit Adam.

And Adam was a fighter! He lived with pain, discomfort and indignities throughout his life and never ushered a single complaint. He was a caring man, and he was loved deeply by his family and friends. We like to imagine that Adam is now in a perfect body . . . running and jumping and dancing . . . with his heart full of happiness and joy and freedom!

As Adam requested, there will be no formal services. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and/or United Cerebral Palsy.

Born Feb. 2, 1937 in Calgary Alberta Canada

Died: Feb. 7 2017 in Bellevue Washington

Don became ill in Dec. but we did not know what was the matter.  In late January he developed pneumonia and was being treated for it.  He was not getting better so we took him to emergency where they did a cat scan and advised us that he had cancer.  No need to say what a shock it was.  He was admitted to the hospital where he remained for a week while they did radiation on his lung tumor.  After a week they told us there was nothing more they could do and advised we take him home under hospice care.  The DR. said he might live for a month or two:  a day after he came home, he passed, peacefully in his own room surrounded by his children and grand children.  Thankfully, he did not have to suffer for months, for this we are grateful.

Don is survived by his wife, Kathleen; his four sons; Joseph, Patrick,( wife Julie) , Daniel(wife LaWanda) Matthew (wife Gina) and one daughter, Charlotte Grayston, (husband Jesse)   He was also blessed with 5 grand children; Sean Donahue, Erin Donahue,

Christopher and Jessica Harris, and April Sialana.

He had five treasured great grand children, Landon, Lucas and Lexie Sialana and Caleb and Kyria Donahue.  Don was “Poppa” to them.  He loved them dearly.

Don was an only child so he did not have any siblings.  However, he had some wonderful  cousins who he grew up with on a farm in Calgary.  They were like brothers to him.

Don worked for Boeing back in the late 50s, then moved on “losing your bags” for Braniff airlines for 16 years until they went bankrupt.  His next job was for American Airlines for 17 years.

He retired in 2000 and was fortunate to enjoy his retirement for 17 years.  He and his wife took several trips during that time, once doing a cross country auto trip from Seattle to Washington DC.  They stopped along the way in Oklahoma and Texas to visit relatives and in Arkansas to visit their son Dan and his wife, LaWanda.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

I would like to thank Evergreen Hospice for their kindness, if only for short time.  A special thank you to Michael an RN with hospice who was the gentlest, kindest man I have ever met.  Kathleen

Michael Lee Paduano

Michael Lee Paduano, 70, quietly left our lives on Jan. 18, 2017.  He was born on Dec. 11, 1946.  Michael was preceded in death by his mother, Vera Paduano,  his father, Michael Paduano II and his first wife, Kay Paduano.  He is survived by his loving sister, Jill Jamieson, beloved godson, Taylor Everts and cherished stepdaughters, Trisha Balderrama and Lisa Mederaris.  He also leaves behind a great legacy of many life-long and treasured friends and loved ones.

Michael’s father passed away when he was just 3 or 4 years old, and consequently was very spoiled by his mother. Being a boy in a tight-knit Italian family, he was also spoiled by uncles whom he said would slip him cash at family gatherings.  When he began to act up, he was sent to military school.  He ran away and was later sent to forestry camp which he thoroughly enjoyed, and where he found the loving discipline and mentor/father figure that he needed.  He later graduated from Lincoln High School.

Since 1969, Michael was the hard-working and highly-respected owner of Spotless Sign Co.. His beautiful signs displayed throughout Seattle and beyond remind us of his brilliant artistic talent, flair for design, interesting color combinations, exceptional skills and eye for detail.  His endless list of talents included hand-sculpted letters and old-school hand-painting and leafing, and he was equally capable of making glamorous, upscale signs, or his personal favorite, distressed-looking signs.

His artistic talent, love of color and appreciation for the unusual carried over into other aspects of his life, including his treasured and eclectic decor, clothing, cars, friends and most of all, his colorful personality! He was truly ONE OF A KIND! His Cheshire Cat grin and devilish personality, infectious laughter, huge heart and sense of fun drew people to him like a magnet!  Even when he was a merciless tease and prankster, one could not help but love him.

Over his lifetime, he had countless fabulous cars and hot rods, the most memorable probably being “Proud Mary,” his 1949 Chevy panel truck. It was more of a “rat rod” – low key (but cool) on the outside, built to the hilt under the hood.  Many friendships revolved around working on or restoring cars together.

He had a talent for remaining great friends with nearly everyone he dated or was married to.  That says a lot about a man.

Michael loved to travel to exotic, sunny places like Belize, Mexico and New Zealand.  He also loved a good road trip.  He enjoyed a good concert and nearly all types of live music.

Many adjectives have been used to describe Michael: LOVABLE, brat, lovable brat, loving, traveler, road-tripper, endearing, stubborn, “little shit,” courageous, fun-loving, “Peter Pan,” button pusher, buddy, generous, talented, life of the party, artist, good dancer, obnoxious, merciless tease, kind-hearted, stylish, handsome, risk-taker, devilish, designer, practical joker, GREAT FRIEND,… the list goes on.

Toward the end, Michael said, “I’ve lived a charmed life!”  Michael Lee Paduano, you charmed all of OUR lives, and you are TRULY UNFORGETTABLE!  In your own words, we’ll  “SEE YOU SOONER THAN LATER.”

Janet Schurr Jackson

Janet Schurr Jackson

Janet Schurr Jackson, the beloved wife of Frank Jackson and the beloved mother of sons, Michael Jackson and Richard(Rick) Jackson passed away at the Evergreen Hospital on Sunday, February 12th, 2017 as a result of a stroke suffered the previous Sunday at home.

Janet was born Sept 18th, 1931 in San Mateo, California to George A. Schurr and Leslye Wadsworth Schurr. She then resided with her family in Burlingame California until age 12 when they moved to Sacramento California and where she graduated from C. K. McClatchey High School in 1949. She attended the University of California in Berkeley and graduated in 1954 with a BA in Education. She taught first grade in Sacramento for several years.

She met her future husband, Frank Jackson, at the First Methodist Church Wesley Single Adult Club in Sacramento, where Frank was in the Air Force stationed at Mather AFB undergoing advanced navigation training. Janet and Frank were married on July 18th, 1960 in the First Methodist Church in Sacramento. They took a flying honeymoon from Sacramento to Victoria, BC in a Cessna 150 piloted by Frank. They then made their home in Sacramento where Frank worked for Aerojet General. Their first son, Michael, was born there on April 21st,  1961. In 1962 they moved to Santa Maria, California where Frank worked for The Boeing Company at Vandenberg AFB on the Minuteman program. Their second son, Rick, was born on August 18th, 1967. The family moved to their present home in Kirkland, WA in 1976 where Janet was a homemaker and Frank continued to work for Boeing until he retired in 2004.

Janet was always a lover of animals and had numerous pets throughout her life. She contributed to animal rights group and constantly received mail from them. As a small girl in Burlingame, during the war, her family raised chickens, two of whom she named “Lana” and “Heddy”. In Sacramento her father bought her a Dutch Keeshond dog and she named her Wilhelmina and called her “Willie” and who lived 13 years.  At this same time she also had a cat she named “Snigomulus” and called her “Sniggy” and who lived 19 years. In Santa Maria, the family had a dog named “Blackjack”. In Kirkland, shortly after moving into the present home, the family acquired a Samoyed dog and she named it “Frosty”. When a neighbor moved away and left their outdoor cat, Jan noticed the cat hanging around the vacant house for several days and not getting fed so she dispatched Frank to take food down to it. The cat, which was all black with a small white chest mark, was initially very skittish and could not be approached to more than 15 feet. After a week or two of daily feeding Frank began to move the feeding dish in about 30 foot steps up the street toward their house. In a week or two the cat was eating from the front porch of Jan’s house, although it was still very skittish and could not be petted. Food for the cat was put out on the front porch daily and after a couple of weeks, the cat calmed down and could be petted. Jan named him “Panther” and he became the family cat for about 6 years. Care for Panther’s last year was shared by the neighbor across the street.

Jan always loved to dance and was into square dancing as a teenager. Jan and Frank joined the Samena Square Dance Club in 1994 and had many happy times there.

Jan inherited the travel bug from her mother and they took many trips together to Europe, the Middle East, Asia and South America. Janet’s mother, who lived to age 100, lived with Janet and Frank the last several years of her life.

Janet is survived by Frank, her husband of 56 years, her sons, Michael Jackson, Rick Jackson(Clara) and grandson, Brandon Jackson.

Kathleen Brooks

Kathleen Brooks

Kathleen Marie Elizabeth Brooks passed away peacefully at Evergreen Hospice in Kirkland on Saturday morning, February 18, 2017 after battling numerous illnesses.  She was 85.

Kathleen was born on December 16, 1931 on the upper Eastside of Manhattan, New York to Thomas F and Theresa Goode.  The fifth of seven siblings, Kathleen grew up “in the tenements” during the height of the depression.  Although her family was poor, “there was always a lot of love.”

Growing up, Kathleen attended Catholic school which gave her a strong faith and inspired her to dream of becoming a nun.  As a young adult, Kathleen held numerous jobs – bakery clerk, theatre usher, and telephone operator, among others, prior to marrying William (Bill) Brooks and raising four children.  Bill’s career in the Navy took Kathleen to Iceland, Jacksonville, Florida and Redding, California before he retired in 1968 and moved the family to the Seattle area, first Federal Way and later Redmond.

As a homemaker and mother, Kathleen was known for her big heart, generosity, well-stocked refrigerator and pantry and huge love of animals.  She enjoyed taking care of her dogs Irish and Cedar, her parakeets and feeding the outdoor birds and squirrels; the squirrels with a huge bag of peanuts she always kept on her deck.  After Bill passed away from cancer in 1999, Kathleen continued to live in the Redmond house and enjoyed reading, listening to music (especially Irish songs) and taking walks around the neighborhood and Grass Lawn Park with her beloved dog Charlie and often her grandkids in tow.

In 2013, Kathleen moved from the Redmond home to the Woodlands at Forbes Creek in Kirkland.  Kathleen was known as the “Mother Theresa” of the community and would spend many hours reading the Bible and praying for others, especially her grandkids whose photos filled her apartment.  In the words of her daughter, “She truly was an angel on this earth who dedicated her life to helping others.”

Kathleen is survived by her sister, Joan DesCoteaux, three children, L. Peter Brooks, Colleen Bagdon, and Heather Southard; grandchildren Sean and Erin Brooks, Tanner, Brady and Seiver Southard, Laura (Bagdon) Dickinson and Courtney Bagdon along with one great grandchild.  She is preceded in death by her parents; sisters Mary, Margaret and Theresa; brothers Thomas and Joseph; her husband, William Brooks and son, Scott Brooks.

A private interment will be held at Kirkland Cemetery on Monday, February 27.  In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the animal charity of your choice.

Karen Renee Rice was born April 29, the day of the Seattle Earthquake of ’65 @ Swedish Hospital in Seattle, WA. She passed away on September 16, 2016 in Tukwila, WA.

Karen grew up on Mercer Island and Bellevue, WA & graduated from Interlake High School, Class of ’83. A few years later she attended Griffith Business College in Bellevue, WA.

Karen always loved music and at one time was fortunate enough to belong to the Mercer Island Children’s Choir. Her choir was honored to be able to sing with the Total Experience Gospel Choir of Seattle. On April 29, 1978 the Gospel choir joined with the Mercer Island Children’s Choir and the combined 160-plus singers drew 3,000 attendees to a joint concert at the Seattle Center House.

When Karen was in high school, she sang with the  Interlake Jazz Choir and was brave enough to sing many solos. Her mother went to all of her concerts and Karen’s beautifully sung solos always brought tears to her mother’s eyes. Barbra Streisand was her idol when she was a young girl.

Unfortunately, when Karen was 19, she suffered a nervous breakdown and struggled with her mental illness until she passed away at the age of 51. She lived a tough but very courageous life! To her mother she was the strongest woman she had ever known!!

In 1998 she met and fell in love with Earl Zanders. She and Earl have two sons, Anthony and Brandon. Anthony (19) gradutated from Sammamish High School in June of 2016. Brandon (15) is a sophomore at Sammamish High and a star football player.

Karen’s love of music was passed onto her son Anthony, who has been involved in bands, jazz and concert choirs since the fifth grade. Karen loved her 2 boys with all her heart and soul!! She enjoyed going to Anthony’s band and choir concerts, as well as Brandon’s football games. She and Brandon played catch football when he was younger and she played hide and seek with Brandon and the neighbor kids. They had movie nights & game nights and Karen made up many activities for the family. She also enjoyed going for long walks with Anthony and his friend Corrina.

In time some changes occured and Karen moved to her own apartment in Tukwila, WA, where she discovered a wonderful church called The Church by the Side of the Road. She made many friends there and found her faith in God once more

Karen will live in the hearts of the people who loved her forever and ever!! She is now in heaven hanging out with her Grandma and Grandpa. She is also spending heaven time with her mother’s partner, Steve, who helped tremendously during Karen’s many trials and tribulations.

Cheryl Ann Smalley

Cheryl Ann Smalley

It’s hard to say goodbye to Cheryl Smalley who passed away in the early morning hours of Friday, February 24, 2017, after fighting a particularly virulent form of cancer.

No list or resume could do her justice. She was a primary health care provider who worked in low income clinics because she believed everyone should have access to health care.

She was also a whip-smart soul with red cowboy boots and a dry sense of humor who loved music and movies and a good glass of wine.

She worked as a Vista Volunteer in the south, driving back-roads with black and white organizers, cut cane with the Venceremos Brigade in Cuba, helped build houses in Matagalpa, Nicaragua, and treated extremely poor patients in rural Honduras.

She lived a year in Paris in tumultuous 1968 just after the general strike, where

Cheryl Smalley

she smoked Gauloises and spoke fluent French and demanded the impossible.

Cheryl was a tireless activist but not some dour politico, and while she marched against the Vietnam War as well as Donald Trump in the last month of her life, she was also a painter and guitar player, a ringleader of friends and instigator of happy hour adventures.

She traveled the globe, living everywhere from Illinois to Paris to Vermont to Austin to Portland to Seattle. She visited the Normandy beaches where her father landed on D-Day plus 13, and took a handful of sand all the way home.

During the last week of her life, friends gathered around her bedside, helped her struggle with air hoses and morphine, and held her hand.

Cheryl Surfing

Cheryl Surfing

One night guitars were played and a great hootenanny broke out where everybody sang along around her bed, and although she was no longer able to communicate at length, she smiled and made it clear she loved the music. A couple of nights later, after an especially trying day, she passed in the early morning hours with friends by her side.

Cheryl is survived by her partner Jim Cullers, a great solid soul, her sister Jane, brother Tad, brother-in-law Heath, sister-in-law Karen, three nieces, a nephew, and Amy Ye, her “little sister” from Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentoring Program.

She leaves behind a great many friends all over the world who will miss her spirit and smile and voice that was sweet and grainy as the flesh of a pear. Cheryl’s annual birthday beach party cookout has always been a highlight of summer and a gathering of friends. This year at Golden Gardens on Saturday, July 29th, the tradition will continue as a celebration and a memorial to her life.

Peace to Cheryl.

Stephen Edward Pelkan

Stephen Edward Pelkan, 52, passed away peacefully March 10, 2017, in Kirkland, WA, with family by his side. He was born March 8, 1965, in Napa, CA to Betsy P. and Dr. Karl F. Pelkan Jr.

After graduating from Justin Siena High School in 1983, Steve entered the Air Force, spent a year in Texas, and then three years at Ramstein AFB in Germany as an electrical power production specialist.  He joked that the Air Force also taught him how to operate a snow shovel.

Steve left the Air Force in 1987, relocating to Reno where he continued working in electrical production, providing  power to communication companies across rural Nevada and emergency backup systems to casinos in the Reno/Carson City area. During this time Steve also studied electrical engineering at the University of Nevada Reno.

Steve and Pam

In 1996, Steve went to work for North Sails in Minden, NV as a maintenance tech and quickly became the Maintenance Manager. Subsequently he became the Equipment Operations Manager, Engineering Project Coordinator, and an Automation Engineer. He was a major contributor to the installation of the North Sails Sri Lanka facility, traveling there several times a year. While working at North Sails he met Pam, the love of his life.

In March of 2016, Steve was excited to be hired by MTorres America in the Seattle area as the Applications Engineering Supervisor for the commissioning of a new robot, his dream job.

Steve enjoyed spending time with family and friends, skiing, motorcycle and dirt-bike riding, hunting, wine tasting, and traveling. He loved history, science, space, and knowing how things work. He was always laughing and joking; upbeat and positive. He was a team player who just knew, “We can get it done.” A loyal friend, devoted to his family, he was fiesty but a gentleman. He will be greatly missed.

Steve is survived by his wife Pamela Pelkan of Bothell, WA; mother Betsy Pelkan of Napa; brother Karl Pelkan (Kitty) of Seattle; sisters Dr. Kathleen Pelkan of Bethel, AK and Alexandra Olenczuk (David) of Fort Worth, TX. He was predeceased by his father, Karl Jr.

A celebration of Stephen’s life will take place 1:00-4:00 pm April 23, 2017, at Compadres Rio Grille, 505 Lincoln Avenue, Napa, CA. A second celebration will take place in Minden, NV, date and time to be determined.
